When you injure yourself or are suffering from a prolonged cold, you might decide to go to your doctor's office. However, you may not wait until your doctor's next regular hours because they might not coincide with your own availability or because your condition, while not exactly an emergency, does make you feel as if you'd like to see someone more quickly than that.

That's when you could opt for an urgent care facility. These are great for those times when you're not in a life threatening situation but you do need to get medical attention pretty quickly because you're not feeling well. These set-ups are often attached to hospitals in terms of their affiliation but are free standing within the community.

However, there are good urgent care facilities that are privately run, too, and designed to meet a need that hospital emergency rooms and doctors' offices can't. When you have something like a sprain or an abdominal ache or the residue of a long-lasting viral or bacterial infection, these places are great. They'll put antiseptic on your wounds and take care of minor burns.

They're also good for checking out STD's and such when people don't really want to see their regular doctor but would rather have anonymity. Urgent care centers are staffed by well qualified doctors and nurses who can see to your problem right away. There's usually not the kind of wait that you'd find in a typical emergency room, nor are the cases you'll be waiting with in the waiting room as severe. That certainly makes it a more acceptable treatment place for many.

The doctors here can give vaccinations and they can also write prescriptions for what you need once they've examined you to see what's going on. They may have to do a check to see that there are no addiction problems before they prescribe something that could be addictive. An urgent care center is very helpful when you're really eager to find out what your diagnosis is and to get it treated quickly.

There are centers like this that cater to specific tasks. Some, for instance, are mainly used for occupational issues. They do all the things that the other centers do but in addition they do the pre employment physical exams and the drug testing that's necessary to get certain jobs. You should check with your insurance company today because you never know when you'll run into an urgent medical situation.

If you know which facilities are connected to your insurance plan, you'll know whether your card can be presented at the place you're considering for payment. Then you won't waste any time when you need to know where to go to see a doctor in a hurry.
